In a March 1975 meeting in Abidjan the decision was taken by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to create AADFI, the African Association of Development Finance Institutions, by designating George Aithnard of Togo, one of AfDB’s senior officials as secretary general of AADFI and providing him with office space and a small staff in the building of the African Development Bank. It was in May 1975 in Dakar that its first General Assembly was held. The first president was August Daubrey of the Ivory Coast. Since then, AADFI has had seven secretaries general as shown at the end of the text, with Magatte Wade from Senegal holding this position currently in 2000.
ADFIAP, the Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific, is the focal point of all development banks and other financial institutions engaged in the financing of sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. Founded in 1976, ADFIAP has presently 117 member-institutions in 42 countries and territories. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a Special Member of the Association. ADFIAP is also a founding member of the 328-member, 154 country, World Federation of Development Financing Institutions (WFDFI) composed of similar regional associations in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. ADFIAP is a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the United Nation’s Economic and Social Council. ADFIAP is the 2008 Overall Winner (Developing Country category) of the Associations Make a Better World Award of the American Society of Association Executives and the Center for Association Leadership. ADFIAP is a non-stock, not-for-profit international organization with headquarters in Manila, Philippines.
Association of National Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) in Member Countries of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is a regional association of DFIs established as an autonomous independent international organization. At the 11th IDB Board of Governors Meeting, (Amman, March 1986), provisional constituent assembly of NDFIs representatives elected to establish ADFIMI. It started its operation in September 1987 at its headquarters is in Istanbul, Turkey, on being given the status of an International Organization by the Turkish Government.
“ALIDE is the international organization representing the development banking system of Latin America and the Caribbean. Established in 1968, it has its permanent headquarters in Lima, Peru. Its aim is to promote the cohesion, strengthening and participation of development banks and DFI’s in economic, financial and social fields in the region. It has a varied membership made up of institutions which operate in the financing for development area, composed by Active, Associate and Collaborating Members. ALIDE has 80 members from 31 countries (regional and non regional) and international financial organizations and multilateral development banks. ALIDE is also a founding member of the World Federation of Development Financing Institutions”. ALIDE is now ISO 9001:2008 Certified.
